Who's on Pole Position?
The AI Playbook for Decision Makers
Every company will use AI. Only a few will lead with it. This is the playbook for owners and executives who want to be in that group: how to approach AI, introduce it, put it to work, make it pay and keep it secure.

Pole Position?
What's inside
Three parts, one argument.
Where AI came from, and where it is going
Three chapters on the past, present and likely future of AI, so the decisions that follow rest on context instead of headlines.
The playbook in seven steps
Decision, Diagnosis, Foundation, Implementation, Deployment, Protection and ROI. One chapter per step, with stories from 25 years of building companies.
Who will own the future?
AI governance, the effect on how we think, existential risk and the future of people. The stakes beyond business.
The seven steps
From the first decision to measured return.
- DecisionLeadership decides what AI is for, before anyone buys a tool.
- DiagnosisAn honest map of where time, money and risk sit today.
- FoundationData, access and ownership put in order first.
- ImplementationThe first systems go live where the return is clearest.
- DeploymentAI is put to work inside daily operations, with people in the loop.
- ProtectionSecurity, policy and shadow AI handled without exceptions.
- ROIResults measured in money and hours, then reinvested.
Why a playbook
What is a playbook?
A playbook is not a textbook. The word comes from sport: the plays a team has practised and runs under pressure, in a set order, without debating every move on the field. In business it means the same: a tested sequence of decisions and actions you can pick up and run.
This book is written that way. It does not explain how language models work. It tells a decision maker what to decide, in which order, and what has to be in place before moving on. Read it cover to cover, or open it at the step you are facing this quarter.
- What to decide at each of the seven steps
- Who should own each decision
- What must be in place before the next step
- The costly mistakes, from real projects
